Manhattan tire son nom du lenape, langue algonquienne commune à plusieurs tribus de la nation Delaware. « Manna-hata » semblait signifier « l’île aux collines ». L’île a été vendue en 1626 aux Néerlandais pour quelques florins par le chef Sagisgura, le sachem de la tribu des Lenape appelée également « loup » par les Français.
Manhattan derives its name from the Lenape, an Algonquian language shared by several tribes from the Delaware nation. « Manna-hata » is thought to have meant « place of many hills ». In 1626 the island was sold for a few florins to the Dutch by Chief Sagisgura, sachem of the Lenape tribe, also named « Loup » (wolf) by the French.
